Sagrave employees have been working since Friday noon at the mouth of the Rhône, near Bouveret (VS), to remove the wood which gathered after bad weather. Between 7000 and 9000 m3 of wood should be taken out of the water.
Employees worked hard all weekend, as well as throughout the day on Monday. “We have a big week, even a week and a half of work,” Claude Goulet, Sagrave operations manager, explained to Keystone-ATS on Monday.
Two boats and two pontoons
The Rhône flood reached its peak during the night from Friday to Saturday when the flow of the river peaked at 1047m3 per second, recalled the specialist. As of Friday, the company, mandated by the canton of Vaud, got to work. It deployed two boats and two pontoons with hydraulic excavators to remove tree trunks and debris collected near the river mouth.
The wood is then piled up on dry land, which a company gradually evacuates. Claude Goulet estimates the quantity of wood to be moved “between 7000 and 9000 m3”. It’s not a record, he said. “On October 15, 2000, a flood of the Rhône brought 14,500 m3,” he said.
