The Israeli army carried out a deadly raid in the Baalbek district of eastern Lebanon, causing the death of an entire family, according to the Lebanese News Agency (ANI) report. This attack took place on Saturday and devastated the house of Ali Kamel Qassem, leading to his death as well as that of his wife and their four children.
This raid is part of the continued escalation of military tensions by Israel against this region, known to be a strong supporter of Hezbollah. Observers consider Baalbek to be a “main human reservoir” of this organization, which exercises great influence in the country.
The 3,000-year-old historic city of Baalbek, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, could see its monuments threatened by such raids. Lebanese authorities have expressed concern about the damage already inflicted on historic sites by previous Israeli strikes.
Since the start of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah on October 8, 2023, the Lebanese Ministry of Health has recorded 3,445 deaths and 14,599 injuries. This situation has also led to the displacement of at least 1,400,000 people, including more than 400,000 children, according to statistics compiled by Anadolu from various official sources and UNICEF.
