German authorities impose new restrictions on asylum seekers

In some German regions, a new system allows the state to use asylum seekers to work in low-paid jobs while their cases are processed, reports Assabah of the weekend (November 16 and 17). But faced with too many requests, the authorities need several months, or even more than a year, to decide their fate. The work imposed by certain cities on this category of migrants concerns sweeping and cleaning the streets, mowing lawns and cleaning windows.

This requirement is controversial. Although this decision primarily affects Syrians and Afghans, a large segment of the Moroccan community is also confronted with this reality. Those who refuse to carry out the above work will be subject to sanctions, such as suspension or reduction of monthly benefits. The asylum seeker must work four hours a day for an hourly wage of less than a dollar. And as long as his file has not been processed by the services concerned, he is prohibited from practicing any other profession.

This new policy was introduced to compensate for the decline in the birth rate and the aging of the German population, relays Assabah. The German authorities have therefore encouraged migration from certain countries, including Morocco, provided that the young migrant has a professional qualification.
