Dakar, June 20 (APS) – The performance of the Senegalese economy highlighted by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the clashes between inmates and guards at the Liberté 6 penal camp are among other subjects addressed by the daily newspapers received, Thursday , at the Senegalese Press Agency (APS).

”After a two-week stay in our country, the delegation of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), led by Edouard Gemayel, faced the press yesterday to discuss exchanges with the authorities on the second review of the program economic and financial which links Senegal to the IMF. Taking advantage of this platform, Edouard Gemayel welcomed the performance of our country which remains the best student in the sub-region, before announcing good prospects for the year 2025,” reports the daily L’As, which reports inflation falling to 2% and double-digit growth.

”Senegal’s economic prospects are good,” writes Le Quotidien. ”According to projections from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Senegal’s growth rate for 2024 is maintained at 7.1, while for 2025, the country will reach a double-digit rate (10.1%). The mission of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which stayed in Senegal from June 6 to 19, 2024 for the second review of the economic and financial program, made this known yesterday during a press conference, notes the newspaper.

According to Le Soleil, “the Senegalese economy continues its revival after the numerous shocks which have shaken it”. ”The second review of the economic reform program of the government of Senegal supported by the IMF was an opportunity to identify good performances and areas for improvement. For 2025, Senegal expects growth of 10.1%, the strongest in sub-Saharan Africa,” notes the newspaper.

Les Echos reports that the IMF, ”devoted to denunciations just a few weeks ago, is coming to the rescue of the new authorities” through a disbursement of 230 billion CFA francs planned for mid-July.

The newspaper returns to ”the serious clashes between detainees and their guards” at the Liberty 6 penal camp.

”Caught in clashes between inmates and guards, the Camp Penal prison was shaken yesterday Wednesday. The Minister of Justice, Ousmane Diagne, went to the scene to assess the situation which is now +under control+. However, serious injuries were recorded, according to videos on social networks. The detainees refused to search room 8, causing a surge of violence in the penal camp’s jails. An investigation has been opened,” writes Les Echos.

The daily Bës Bi reports that ”it was a hot day at the Penal Camp prison. A Wednesday of anger and smoke, causing a mutiny by the inmates who would not have appreciated the routine searches by the guards. But sources confide that it all started with a discovery of Indian hemp in the rooms.

In a press release, the prison administration speaks of an “incident” that occurred on Wednesday at 9 a.m. after the residents of room 8 of the Liberté 6 penal camp refused to submit to the roll call, which remains a mandatory security measure.

”These images and videos (…) result from an incident that occurred after the residents refused to submit to the roll call (…) They subsequently deliberately set fire to their sleeping belongings,” explained the communications department.

Sud Quotidien takes an interest in official vehicles, accommodation and diplomatic passports and exclaims ”these disruptive privileges!”.

”In Senegal, good governance is strongly impacted by the management of official vehicles and accommodation as well as diplomatic passports. Indeed, more and more non-right holders are reluctant to make these privileges previously available to them within the framework of their missions. Hence the recent standoff engaged by the new power against all these recalcitrants who are reluctant to restore the trappings of the Republic awarded following their former functions,” writes the newspaper.
