The Ministry of Communication, Telecommunications and Digital (MCTN) announced the publication, scheduled for November 30, 2024, of the official list of media recognized and compliant with the regulations in force in Senegal. This initiative is part of an ambitious reform of the media sector launched by the President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, since his election.
In a press release, the MCTN explained that the publication of this list is part of a broader process of restructuring the media sector, started with a consultation of press stakeholders on June 25, 2024. This consultation made it possible to establish a roadmap for in-depth reform of the sector, with clear priorities: bringing press companies into compliance, revising the Press Code and restructuring the Press Support and Development Fund.
The MCTN also specified that media outlets not complying with the regulations in force will receive a formal notice after the publication of the list. The companies concerned will have to comply or face sanctions which may include suspension.
The ministry also stressed that this reorganization aims to promote responsible journalism, essential for the stability and pacification of the political and social space. This approach comes after several incidents where certain media were accused of broadcasting speeches inciting violence. In response, an interministerial commission was set up, including representatives from the ministries of Justice, the Interior, and Labor, as well as the National Press Card Commission and CORED, to ensure compliance with standards. and regulations in the sector.
This reform marks a decisive turning point for the Senegalese media landscape, ensuring that the press is a key player in the promotion of social peace and journalistic ethics.
