It is the president of the national executive council of the Parti Québécois (PQ), Catherine Gentilcore, who will be the PQ candidate in the by-election in the Terrebonne riding. The party will present its candidate to the media on Wednesday.
This by-election, which has not yet been called, was caused by the resignation of former CAQ minister Pierre Fitzgibbon, who was elected in Terrebonne in 2018, then re-elected in 2022.
The government must call this by-election by the beginning of next March.
Terrebonne, a former PQ stronghold
Before the arrival of Pierre Fitzgibbon in 2018, the Parti Québécois had only lost this riding once since 1976. It was in 2007, the year when Mario Dumont’s former party, the Democratic Action of Quebec (ADQ), had the wind in its sails. Jean-François Therrien had been elected, but the PQ had quickly reconquered this constituency in 2008 with Mathieu Traversy.
In 2018, Pierre Fitzgibbon won the riding against outgoing PQ MP Mathieu Traversy. There CAQ retained this constituency in 2022 with 49% of the votes, compared to 19% for the PQ.
