This rate is at the same level as that of last year, in the same quarter.
The unemployment rate rose again for the last quarter of the year, but very slightly, reaching the 7,4 %, INSEE announced this Wednesday, November 13.
A little more than 2.3 million people are estimated to be unemployed for this last quarter of 2024, INSEE revealed this Wednesday. Calculated at 7.4%, it was 7.3% in the first quarter. Furthermore, the National Institute of Statistics stressed that the rate is identical to that of last year, in the same quarter.
A “quasi-stable” development
So, this summer, 35,000 more people hit by unemployment. An evolution “quasi stable” according to the institute which recalls that the lowest point of unemployment was reached at the end of 2022 with a rate of 7.1%. In addition, the 2024 unemployment rate remains 3.1 points below the peak observed in mid-2015.
The “boosted” employment rate among women and older people
On the other hand, INSEE observes that the rate explodes among young people aged 15 to 24 with an additional 1.8 points over the last quarter to reach 19.7%. The opposite is observed among those aged 50 and over with a drop of 0.1% and 0.1 point among those aged 25-49.
If the unemployment rate is increasing among men, increasing by 0.3% (7.6%), it is falling by 0.2 points among women (7.2%).
These results confirm the wishes of the government through the contested pension reform: to increase the employment rate among 50-64 year olds, which has reached its highest level since 1975.
