POLITICS – An exceptional decision. While it had never called for voting for a political party or a specific movement, the CGT decided to support the new Popular Front for the legislative elections. The decision was taken during a vote at the National Confederal Committee, this Tuesday, June 18, reveals RMC.

An unprecedented position justified by Sophie Binet, the general secretary of the confederation. “In this type of moment, the CGT always takes its responsibilities”she declared on BFMTV. “Our Republic, our democracy are in danger,” adds the manager. “We call for a barrier and a vote for the program of the new Popular Front”program which responds according to it “the best for the aspirations of the world of work”.

The CGT traditionally maintains political neutrality to preserve its independence and its ability to defend the interests of all workers. It is in fact a signatory of the Amiens Charter which guarantees the independence of unions vis-à-vis political parties and the State. During the second round of the 2022 presidential elections, the CGT thus called to vote against the National Rally, without however explicitly supporting Emmanuel Macron.

This decision was greeted with enthusiasm by members of the new Popular Front. This “historic decision” underlines “the seriousness of the threat which now weighs on the world of work with the possibility of an RN government », writes Jean-Luc Mélenchon in particular.
