The body of a 55-year-old American was discovered on the island of Corfu on Sunday, bringing to three the number of foreign tourists found dead in Greece in one week. And searches are still underway to locate three other foreign tourists on other Greek islands, according to local media.

Most of these tourists had undertaken hikes under the blazing sun, while the heatwave was raging in Greece. According to meteorologists, the country experienced the earliest heat wave lasting at least three days on record, knowing that for Greece we are talking about temperatures exceeding 38 degrees.

The American’s body was discovered at sea near the port of Mathraki. He must be transferred to Corfu hospital for an autopsy, said the Greek agency Athens News Agency, which reports that the fifty-year-old was last seen by residents in a cafe last Tuesday.

This is the latest discovery of the body of a foreign tourist, after that of British television star doctor Michael Mosley, found dead on June 9 on the Greek island of Symi, in the Aegean Sea. Aged 67, Michael Mosley had taken a walk on the coast, in the heat of the day. His body was spotted five days after his disappearance.

On Saturday morning, the remains of a 74-year-old Dutch tourist were located by a firefighter drone on the island of Samos. The body was lying in a ravine a few hundred meters from where he was last seen last Sunday, walking with difficulty.

Furthermore, emergency services are looking for two French women who are missing on the island of Sikinos. On Friday, these two women, aged 73 and 64, left their respective hotels to meet, according to local media. And another tourist has disappeared on the island of Amorgos.
