Landings of coastal and artisanal fishing at ports located on the Mediterranean reached 6,542 tonnes (T) at the end of May 2024, down 16% compared to the same period of the previous year, according to the Office National Fisheries (ONP).
In value, these landings are up 4% to more than 316.60 million dirhams (MDH) during the first five months of 2024, compared to the same period a year earlier (303.90 MDH), said the ONP in its latest report on coastal and artisanal fishing statistics in Morocco.
By species, the quantities of pelagic fish landed in these ports, located on the coast from Tangier to Saidia, fell by 37% at the end of last May to 2,354 T, for an estimated value of more than 70.50 MDH (-18 %), compared to approximately 86.12 MDH/3,756 T at the end of May 2023.
Landings of white fish reached 1,104 T at the end of last May, for a value of 44.10 MDH (+1%), compared to more than 43.68 MDH/1,179 tonnes year-on-year.
Regarding landings of cephalopods, they recorded an increase of 14% to 2,554 T for revenues of more than 169.15 MDH (+20%), while for crustaceans, landings fell by 12% to 472 T , generating revenues of more than 32.80 MDH (+5%).
As for shellfish landings, they fell by 100% to 0 tonnes, compared to more than 1.46 MDH/63 T a year earlier, while for seaweed, landings increased by 8,691% to 59 tonnes, compared to 1 ton year-on-year.
At the national level, landings of marketed coastal and artisanal fishing products reached 392,692 tonnes at the end of May 2024, down 7% compared to the same period a year earlier. In value, these landings fell by 1% to more than 4.37 billion dirhams.
