More than a week after the floods, a giant demonstration took place in the streets of the regional capital on Saturday November 9.
After the waters, it is now anger that flows freely in the streets of Valencia. Tens of thousands of people demonstrated on Saturday, November 9, against the government of the region and in particular its president Carlos Mazón.
To the cries of«assassins»the boss PP (Popular Party, conservative), propelled to power by an alliance which had become obsolete with the far right, was criticized for his chaotic management of the floods which left at least 220 dead in this region of the east of Spain and its inaction in the face of climate emergencies. The president of the government Pedro Sanchez was also targeted by criticism, to a lesser extent, with the crowd accusing the two men of their lack of coordination in the management of this crisis.
“The management of Mazón has been indecent”
Ana de la Rosa, 30, regrets “political wars when it was not the time because the citizens needed help and did not have it.” The young archivist demands «justice» for what she describes as“manslaughter”. For Julián García, 73 years old, “Mazón's management has been indecent and he should resign. The Valencian government is responsible and did not want to ask what it could ask from the central government, also a little responsible,” believes the retiree.
Originally from Valencia, Trini Orduña demonstrated against “the shameful political class”. “We are the laughing stock of the whole world,” she judges, while the local population is worried about the health consequences of the odors “rotten egg, sulfur” which emanate from disaster areas coming from “the decomposition of organic matter without oxygen” and cause migraines and dizziness to rescuers and residents.
Gathered in front of the Valence town hall, the procession then moved in front of the regional hotel. The head of the procession paraded under a large banner “Mazón resignation”, where there was the inverted portrait of the president of the Valencia region. Other slogans paid tribute to the missing, noted The World : “Today, all our voices are not united, because from under the mud, we cannot shout.” Another demonstration was held in the streets of Madrid. Hundreds of people also gathered in the Spanish capital, notably chanting “Mazón resignation” et “the united people will never be defeated”.
