PLQ leadership and 3rd link: Pablo Rodriguez for a public transport tunnel

Ahead in the polls, Liberal leadership candidate Pablo Rodriguez supports a third public transport link between Quebec and Lévis: a tram passing in a tunnel between the two city centers.

“I understand and I see the traffic, I see that it exists!” said the aspiring leader on Friday, as the Congress of the Liberal Party of Quebec opened, which brings together some 950 members this weekend in Lévis . All declared candidates in the leadership race are present, a first.

Since the event takes place on the South Shore of Quebec, the subject of the 3rd link was inevitable. Pablo Rodriguez, favorite of Liberal voters according to the latest Léger poll, said he was in favor of the version contained in the report from the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, which advocates a public transport tunnel between the two city centers.

“I am for (…) an underground with a tramway,” he insisted. According to him, this public transport scenario makes it possible to reduce the number of vehicles on the roads. “If you have 1,000 cars parked in the incentive parking lot, how many fewer cars are there on the Quebec Bridge? 1000,” he added.

He is not the only one in favor of a 3rd link in this race. Another aspirant to the liberal throne, Denis Coderre continues to campaign for a new link which could be motorway. He did not fail to highlight the road congestion he had to face to get to the Congress in Lévis.

MP Frédéric Beauchemin, who will also be on the starting line of the leadership campaign, supports a third highway link created in partnership with the private sector. According to him, the long-term economic development of the region is at stake.

Lawyer Marc Bélanger also believes that cars, but also public transport, should be able to cross the St. Lawrence River on a new link.

Only the former CEO of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce, Charles Milliard, remained unclear. He promises a mobility plan for all of Eastern Quebec shortly.
