A 13-year-old girl was seriously injured in the hand after the explosion of a firecracker thrown into her apartment in the center of Brussels. Three juvenile suspects have been identified, and an investigation is underway to clarify the circumstances of the incident.

A 13-year-old girl was seriously injured in her right hand Tuesday afternoon during an incident with a “firecracker” type explosive in an apartment in the city center in Brussels, the prosecutor’s office said, confirming information from Sudinfo and Het Nieuwsblad. Three suspects, minors, were identified, according to the prosecution. An investigation is underway.

The incident took place on Tuesday around 12:45 p.m. in an apartment on the first floor of a building located on rue Van Artevelde, in the center of Brussels, according to the two media outlets. A 13-year-old girl was at home having dinner when two firecrackers were thrown through the glass of the kitchen window.

The girl then probably tried to pick up one of the fallen firecrackers to throw it outside, but it exploded in her right hand.

The building was then evacuated for fear of further explosions, and the victim was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

According to Sudinfo and Het Nieuwsblad, the incident was probably the work of certain young people, one of whom had been harassing the victim’s brother at school for some time now.

Furthermore, it appears that this was the second time in three days that this suspect had thrown firecrackers at the victims’ home building. The first time, one of the explosives exploded on the balcony of the apartment’s terrace, without causing any injuries.
