Several numbers battles punctuate the discussions. Each side denounces the untruths or inaccuracies of the other. Joëlle Minacci and the left insist: “we are not pursuing an anti-car policy and we take motorists into account”. Figure of the PLR, Patrick Bertschy is annoyed: “I no longer have confidence. Every time, you do as you want!” A generational conflict is added to the divide between left and right. Despite the passionate positions of the political factions, the debate on the municipal vote on November 24 did not attract the crowd to the Vevey Council Chamber. At the same time, American election night began.
At the origin of this vote, there is a decision of the Municipal Council which could seem anecdotal. Last June, by 44 votes to 29, the legislature approved a credit of 110,000 francs for the purchase and installation of 17 parking meters in the Plan-Dessus district, in the southwest of the city. With the help of the Center and the UDC, the PLR launched a referendum and obtained 2,233 signatures while it needed 2,041 to call citizens to the polls. 13,000 people are invited to have their say. Completely renewed after a long political crisis, the left-wing executive will be judged for the first time.
