The 100 mm of precipitation that hit Cadaqués in a few hours could have had dramatic consequences.

In a Spain still traumatized by the images of the deadly floods in Valencia, the storms which hit Catalonia, on both sides of the border, during the night from Thursday to Friday, considerably increased anxiety among residents. And seeing the images broadcast this Friday early in the morning, we can understand the population.

This is how the small stream of Cadaqués transformed into an impressive river which flowed down the streets of the village made famous by the surrealist artist Salvador Dalí.

According to Catalan firefighters, no less than 100 mm of precipitation fell in just a few hours in the area.

When we woke up, the material damage was still to be assessed but the Catalan authorities were able to count around thirty cars which were carried away by a stream in Cadaqués to the outskirts of the city's port. As is often the case in coastal towns in Catalonia, the vehicles were parked in the bed of the stream leading to the sea and which had been dry for many weeks.

“The vehicles were piled up under a bridge and did not reach the sea, no one was injured or trapped,” said the Catalan firefighters.

Emergency services indicated this Friday morning that they were only called to Cadaqués in Alt Empordà, the northern region of Catalonia. They have been called to intervene 8 times in Baix Empordà since 3 hours, mainly due to flooding in private homes. No injuries were reported during these interventions according to firefighters.
