Farmers hoped to escape another year of drought. Gaia, the goddess of the Earth, listened to them. However, not all of their wishes were granted. After experiencing a heatwave in 2023, farmers had their feet in the water in 2024. And this high tide caused serious problems for cereal crops throughout Switzerland.

In twelve years of experience, Nicolas Pavillard, owner of the Montavaux farm in northern Vaud, has never seen this. “We have been struggling since last fall. Because of the weevil (a pest), we had to harvest the beets later than planned, which pushed back the sowing of cereals. But that was without taking into account that from October 15 it was only going to rain once until June.” Result: some of the wheat could not be sown on time. “We were forced, on certain plots, to have to work with spring wheat which has a lower yield.”
