Buoyed by Trump’s election, the New York Stock Exchange opens sharply

The New York Stock Exchange opened sharply higher on Wednesday, encouraged by the victory of Republican candidate Donald Trump in the US presidential election.

Thus, the Dow Jones soared by 3.08%, the Nasdaq index by 2.12% and the broader S&P 500 index by 2.00%.

From the opening, Dow Jones and S&P 500 set new session records.

Even before the publication of the complete results of the election, Donald Trump was already assured of returning to the White House, following a final vote.

The former US president won most of the key states, particularly Georgia, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

Considered one of the first beneficiaries of this new environment, the technology sector was celebrating. Major semiconductor players such as Nvidia (+3.11%), Broadcom (+2.88%) and Texas Instruments (+3.25%) were clearly in the green, as were Alphabet and Microsoft.

Also, the action of Donald Trump’s media group soared by more than 25% at the opening. The stock gained nearly 35%, before slowing. Around 2:50 p.m. GMT, it gained 16.44%.

Donald Trump was elected 47th President of the United States on Wednesday, surpassing the minimum of 277 electors required. This victory is all the more important as the Republican Party has also secured control of the Senate and retains the chances of also winning the House of Representatives.

In a speech to supporters in West Palm Beach, Florida, Trump hailed a victory for freedom and democracy and a “magnificent opportunity to make America great again.” He also promised to usher in a “golden age” for his country, and to end divisions and polarization within American society.
