Lhe renovation work at the Léonard crossroads in Auderghem will cause disruptions on the Brussels ring road until April-May 2025, predicts the Flemish Roads and Traffic Agency (Agentschap Wegen en Verkeer, AWV) in a newsletter published Wednesday.
Two tunnels are located under the Léonard crossroads, one 360 meters long for the Brussels ring road (R0) and the other 80 meters long for E411 traffic. While the ring tunnel, which has been undergoing a complete renovation since March 2023, was initially scheduled to reopen during the day at the end of November, several unforeseen events disrupted the original schedule. “In recent months, maintaining a network of ceiling beams has taken longer than expected. Unexpectedly, we also had to make joints at the ends of the tunnel,” explains the AWV, specifying that all of this unforeseen and additional work results in a delay of four to five months, i.e. say until April/May 2025 instead of November 2024.
Traffic from the inner ring currently passes through the Leonard crossroads on the surface. This configuration will remain in effect until April/May. The connections for traffic coming from Auderghem to Waterloo, as well as for traffic from Waterloo to Auderghem, also remain closed until April/May, according to the Flemish agency.
As soon as the work is completed, currently scheduled for April-May, the work will continue at night (from 8:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.) in the ring tunnels to allow traffic across the entire width of the ring during the day.
Other work planned
Furthermore, in April or May 2025, maintenance work will begin, this time on the E411 tunnel. This tunnel is located at level -1 of the Léonard crossroads, just above the Brussels ring tunnel. This work will mean that traffic towards Brussels will be on one lane and that towards Namur on two lanes.
Finally, the Flemish Roads and Traffic Agency announces disruptions during the weekend of November 9 to 11. A tent installed for the work at the exit of the inner ring tunnel must indeed be moved, which will involve using a traffic lane in the direction of Zaventem. “Consequently, motorists heading towards Zaventem should expect longer travel times this weekend,” warns the Flemish agency.
