Former Senegalese President Macky Sall could take an unprecedented step in his political career on November 17, by becoming the first former Senegalese head of state to choose not to vote in a general election, not out of obligation, but by personal decision.

Designated head of the list of the Takku-Wallu coalition for the early legislative elections of 2024, Macky Sall, who now resides in Marrakech in Morocco since the end of his mandate, will not be able to exercise his right to vote from abroad. Registered on the electoral lists of the commune of Fatick, Macky Sall is affiliated to polling station no. 3 of Collège Thierno Mamadou Sall, where he voted during the presidential election last March. However, due to the absence of an exceptional revision of the electoral lists, decided by the Constitutional Council on July 12, 2024, no transfer of voting location was permitted for these legislative elections.

Although he could, in theory, return to Senegal to vote, this seems unlikely. So far, he has kept his distance from the campaign, and a return could cause tensions, with some supporters of the current government having raised the possibility of prosecuting him for alleged acts during his mandate. Although this threat has not been formally confirmed, it could dissuade the former president from returning to the country.
