With the next version of iOS, Apple will allow you to temporarily share the location of your connected beacons with an airline.
It may soon be easier to find your lost luggage in the future. Apple has updated iOS 18.2, which is still in beta, and it brings a new feature to the Find My app.
This application, present for several years on iOS, allows you to locate the location of your various Apple devices and accessories (and certain others from partner brands), including Airtag tags. And iOS 18.2 will allow you to share the location of this little tracker with a “trusted third party”, for example if you put it in one of your lost bags.
Better fight against baggage loss
Spotted by Aaron, a regular contributor to the specialized site Macrumors, this function gives access to an exclusive link which, if opened on an iPhone, will display the object concerned on a map. The user can thus send it to an airline so that the latter can find and return their baggage.
This link is only valid for one week, and you can deactivate it at any time. Apple also made sure that one could see how many people visited the link. Finally, you can also allow your contact information to be shared – for example a phone number or email.
Until then, Airtags already allowed their location to be shared, but only between members of the same family. For example if we install the tracker on a dog’s collar or to follow a child going to school.
The company may also want to calm things down with airlines, some of which have banned Airtags in luggage due to “disruption to the proper functioning of aircraft.” An excuse, in the opinion of some experts, when they were regularly singled out for their baggage management.
