Crisis in medical schools: a new proposal on the students’ table

The crisis of medical studentswhich has lasted for more than ten months, finally seems on the verge of finding the long-awaited outcome. This development comes following a new proposal from the Minister of Higher Education, Azeddine El Midaouiwhich seemed to respond to the main demands of the “future doctors“, notably the question of maintaining the seventh year of study for students currently in their second year and beyond.

According to a source close to the matter, the national coordination of medical and dental students is preparing to hold general assemblies this Tuesday at 3 p.m. These meetings will aim to explain in detail the offer made by the ministry before a vote scheduled for Wednesday, which will take place in person in the various Faculties of medicine. This vote represents a glimmer of hope to defuse the crisis.

It should be noted that during the meeting held on Friday in Rabat, the Ministry of Higher Education formulated a proposal through the mediator of the Kingdomstipulating that the decision to reduce the duration of studies to six years would not apply retroactively. Thus, promotions having integrated the Faculties of medicine before March 13, 2023, the date of publication of the ministerial decree in Official bulletinwill continue to follow a training period of seven years and will not be affected by the reform of the educational system.

In addition, the ministry agreed to lift disciplinary sanctions against students and to reorganize student representation within the Faculties. He also pledged to respect the conclusions of previous dialogues, notably the increase in scholarships and the reform of the third cycle, in accordance with previous agreements and proposals.
