(Ecofin Agency) – Morocco is the second largest supplier of fish in Africa after Egypt. While in the country, fishing provides almost the entire supply of the commodity, the authorities are increasing efforts to improve the contribution of aquaculture.

In Morocco, the National Agency for the Development of Aquaculture (ANDA) wants to support the establishment of 232 aquaculture production farm projects in the country by 2025. This is what emerges from a meeting of work held last Wednesday, October 30 between ANDA and Zakia Driouich, Secretary of State to the Minister of Agriculture, in charge of Maritime Fisheries.

The new projects announced are planned to increase the country’s aquaculture production capacity by 115,900 tonnes over time. According to information relayed by the local daily the Economistthese installations will be set up in areas with high aquaculture potential, where ANDA applies measures to attract investments, in particular by simplifying procedures and making strategic resources available.

In statements reported by local media last February, the Ministry of Agriculture reported that Morocco has 442 aquaculture projects and farms with a cumulative potential production capacity estimated at 300,000 tonnes per year.

Data compiled by the World Bank indicates that in 2022, aquaculture production totaled only 2,310 tonnes in the Sherifian Kingdom, which represents less than 0.1% of total fishery production valued at more than 1.5 million tonnes.

In Morocco, the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab region is the main center of aquaculture production, housing nearly 70% of the country’s aquaculture projects, according to official data.
