The tragedy of migration has struck again. This Thursday, October 31, 2024, a canoe of migrants, leaving from Niodior in Senegal with around 150 people on board, finally arrived in Nouakchott in Mauritania. But the trip ended in tragedy: 28 people lost their lives, and 37 others are in critical condition. “They abandoned them to die,” denounces activist Helena Maleno Garzón on her page
The first calls for help from this canoe date back to the previous Saturday. Despite the report, no help was deployed in the days that followed. The Spanish Salvamento Marítimo initially transferred responsibility for the operation to Moroccan authorities. For their part, the Moroccan authorities, arguing a lack of software adapted to the region, simply sent a commercial ship to the area. But for NGOs, this was not enough. The inaction of countries capable of acting quickly, in particular Spain and Morocco, is singled out as irresponsible and inhumane.
