Like other sweet foods, chocolate could well be subject to a new tax which is part of the discussions of the draft social security budget. This measure angered artisan chocolatiers.
On October 23, the National Assembly adopted the amendment to the tax on added sugars in food products. For artisan chocolatiers, this news is extremely penalizing as reported by BFMTV. In an environment already heavily impacted by the rising costs of electricity and raw materials such as cocoa, which has increased by more than 30% compared to last year, an increase in taxes on chocolate will inevitably have repercussions on sale prices.
The planned increase in VAT from 5.5% to 20% could have disastrous effects for artisans. Chocolate produced in an artisanal manner would be even less accessible for consumers, who would be referred to lower quality products on sale in most stores.
A petition launched
During the Chocolate Fair which was held on Wednesday October 30, seven national organizations representing the artisans and small businesses concerned took action. The president of the Confederation of Chocolatiers and Artisans of France, Thierry Lalet, indicated that such a tax on chocolate would certainly endanger the activities of companies in the sector. “ These taxes make the situation insurmountable for our companies, in a notable context of recent explosion in cocoa prices and while margins have continued to erode in recent years “, he lamented.
Thus, a petition was submitted to the Prime Minister in order to draw his attention to the situation of companies in this sector. Currently, it has been signed by more than 3,400 people.
