Yet another change in French wallets at the start of the month. This Friday, November 1, is synonymous with an increase in the minimum wage of 2%, in accordance with an announcement by Prime Minister Michel Barnier during his general policy speech. The winter break, like the 9th Tobacco-Free Month operation, also starts today. Europe 1 takes stock of the main changes.
The minimum wage increased by 2%
Michel Barnier committed to this last October 1: the minimum wage will be increased by 2% from this Friday, November 1, and not on January 1 as was planned. According to the government, this increase should bring the monthly net minimum wage to 1,426 euros, instead of 1,398 euros, with the aim of anticipating the effects of inflation.
Supplementary pensions for private sector employees increased by 1.6%
Supplementary pensions for former private sector employees will be increased by 1.6% from November 1, i.e. 0.2 points below the inflation forecast by INSEE for 2024 (1.8%). This increase is equivalent to an increase of 13 euros per month on average, for a supplementary pension of 800 euros, a source close to the board of directors of this scheme, managed jointly by employers and unions, told AFP.
Drop in gas prices
The reduction in the “benchmark sales price” of gas from the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) will lead to a 1.18% reduction in prices this November.
Deadline for paying real estate wealth tax (IFI)
French people subject to real estate wealth tax (IFI) have until November 15 to make payment, if they do not use an electronic means. This deadline is November 20 in the case of payment by Internet. The withdrawal will be made from November 25, according to the tax calendar.
Winter break begins
Like every year, the winter break begins on November 1st and ends on March 31st. During this period, which corresponds to the colder months, tenants who cannot pay their rent cannot be evicted. Exceptions nevertheless exist, for those who benefit from rehousing adapted to their family needs, and for squatters in primary or secondary residences. Gas and electricity cuts due to unpaid bills are also prohibited.
First day of the Tobacco Free Month operation
It is also a chestnut tree for the month of November: since 2016, the No Tobacco Month campaign has started on All Saints’ Day to “encourage smokers to quit smoking”. This operation is organized by Public Health France and the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with Health Insurance. Different tools are given to smokers to help them reduce their consumption.
Winter tires are mandatory in the mountains
Motorists who travel on mountain roads must equip themselves with winter tires, or have snow chains or socks. Indeed, in 34 French departments which are full of mountainous areas, it is essential to equip your vehicle from this Friday, until March 31, 2025.
