The government wants to extend the use of meal vouchers in supermarkets in 2025. Restaurateurs denounce a shortfall for their establishments.
The Secretary of State for Consumer Affairs, Laurence Garnier, announced, Wednesday October 23, in an interview with Parisianthat the government was in favor of extending the use of meal vouchers in supermarkets for the year 2025, in order to support the purchasing power of the French. Although this measure must still be adopted by Parliament to come into force, it has already caused many restaurateurs to react.
The possibility of using restaurant vouchers in supermarkets appeared in 2022 and was extended to 2023 to cope with inflation. Consumers can thus purchase food products, whether they are immediately consumable or not. The leading employers' union in the hotel and catering sector, the Union of Hotel Trades and Industries (Umih), is opposed to this exemption.
Establish a double ceiling?
“Over one year, 600 million no longer go to restaurants, but to supermarket checkouts”castigated Frank Delvau, president of Umih Paris Île-de-France, interviewed on BFM TV. The union proposes to introduce a double ceiling as a compromise. He proposes that recipients of meal vouchers can spend 20 euros in supermarkets and up to 40 euros in restaurants and bakeries.
