Christiane Germain on the board of directors of Santé Québec: “the patient is a client”

The full list of members who will sit on the board of directors of Santé Québec was revealed on Wednesday and businesswoman Christiane Germain will chair it. She would have accepted the challenge with the desire to improve the status quo of the health system.

Mme Germain will be accompanied by some well-known faces, such as Régine Laurent and Diane Lamarre. This “strong team” for the new president is another reason which pushed her to accept this position which “does not scare her”.

“The variety of skills really comes from people who are involved in the health sector,” she told Mario Dumont during the “Version Dumont” segment. “I think that for a project like Santé Québec, it is very important to seek out these different skills.”

The one who ran the Germain hotels has less experience in the health field, but is not discouraged by those who question her abilities. “I think of Mr. Dubé, who had never been involved in the field of health, and I look at him today as Minister of Health. I think he does a very, very good job.”

She therefore reiterates that this condition should not be necessary to occupy an administrative position in this field. She still knows that managing a hotel company and a health agency are two very distinct roles.

She particularly wants to work for the patient, whom she sees, from a certain angle, as a client.

His vision of CA

“The role of a board of directors is mainly […] a role of support, support, accompaniment and supervision,” declares Christiane Germain.

The goal would not be to have a board of directors involved on a daily basis, but to ensure that decisions between the teams are made and that they are the best. “We want to set goals together,” she adds.

Confronted by Mario Dumont on the documents that the boards of directors never read, Mme Germain would like to point out that “things have changed a lot now, thank God!”

Pessimism to be expected among Quebecers

Many citizens and health care workers are discouraged by the system that has not worked for decades. Some of them remain skeptical about the capacity of the new agency to really change things.

Christiane Germain is always positive. She says on air that we “can’t just stay at home doing nothing and say that things are going bad.”

Accessibility to care is one of the network’s many difficulties, she admits. She understands that some things are not so bad: “when you are in the system, things are fine. There are extraordinary teams and people in the health field, so I think it’s important to highlight it and solve the problems.

At the time of writing these lines, the new president had not yet become aware of all the problems inherent in the health sector.

The Santé Québec agency, one last chance?

At the LCN studio on Wednesday evening, Régine Laurent declared that this agency would be the “last chance” to save the network.

“I don’t know if I would go so far as to say that it’s the last chance, but it’s a very important step,” replies Mme Germain. “Let’s make sure that this step [sera] accomplished with great efficiency and […] agility.”
