The onlookers who passed by Maison Buet on Saturday morning, rue Haldimand in Lausanne, saw life in pink: they were able to see in the window the largest character of this color in the world. Nearly 24 kg of chocolate treats to highlight “Pink October”, a period which aims to raise public awareness of breast cancer and raise money for the fight against this disease.

One in eight Swiss women affected

As a reminder, 6,500 new cases of breast cancer are detected in Switzerland each year. One in eight women are affected. Some 20% are under 50, 5% are under 40. Even 1% of men are affected. It is the most common cancer in women and the deadliest. But early detection significantly increases the chances of recovery and avoids very heavy treatment.

The “Le Carac rose” operation was in its 3rd edition. It was launched in 2022, first with three confectioneries. But last year, more than 100 were already there and sold some 34,700 pink pastries.

And this year, more than 250 bakeries responded. Even Migros participated in the event by offering these pastries in French-speaking Switzerland. It is to give even greater media coverage to the campaign that the association launched the XXXL carac challenge at Maison Buet. A carac whose diameter is 70 cm, ten times larger than its original version.

Note that for each pink treat sold, 50 cents are donated to one of the seven associations or foundations supporting women affected by breast cancer. The goal is to sell 100,000 pieces this year.
