Jean-René Cazeneuve, Ensemble deputy for the Republic of Gers and member of the finance committee, answers questions from Brigitte Boucher on the examination of the budget law text. He defends the need to increase taxes.

Since Wednesday October 16, the 2025 budget has been at the heart of the debates in the finance committee at the National Assembly. The announcement of a tax increase fuels criticism from the opposition, but for Jean-René Cazeneuve, it is a measure taken “reluctantly”. The MP Together for the Republic (EPR) calls for “maximum effort” be done first on France’s spending and that the tax increase “be both as small as possible and as limited in time as possible”.

“There is no miracle! If you tax companies today, you will have an impact tomorrow: they will invest less, pay their employees less, hire less. It’s very mathematical”, assumes Jean-René Cazeneuve. However, the member of the finance committee recalled that he would “vote” the initial budget proposed by the Barnier government, because it is a “balance between controlling spending, controlling our debt and increasing taxes on an ad hoc basis.”
