The Assembly Finance Committee officially requests the power to investigate budgetary drift

MPs will be able to look into the drift in public accounts. This Wednesday, the Finance Committee of the National Assembly officially requested the opportunity to examine France’s budgetary situation in the coming weeks. The commission wants to investigate “the causes” of «la variation» and “gaps in tax and budget forecasts” noted for the years 2023 and 2024. The request will be transmitted to President Yaël Braun-Pivet then notified to the government, to the group and commission presidents, who will have a brief period to object.

This announcement comes as the subject has sparked numerous reactions from the opposition, who accuse Emmanuel Macron and his successive governments of having let the French deficit slip away, plunging the country into a financial drift. On Tuesday, the Prime Minister, Michel Barnier, said he hoped that parliamentary work would make it possible to establish “the truth” on the budgetary slippage, thus seeming to give its agreement for such an investigation to be launched.

The senators also took up this explosive issue: that same day, the Finance Committee of the upper house indicated that it would “relaunch and update the “flash” information mission set up at the end of March 2024 and which submitted its report on June 12 on the deterioration of public finances since 2023”. In particular, it must “shedding light on the evolution of public balance forecasts in 2024, both in terms of revenue and expenditure”et “clarify the chain of responsibilities between technical forecasts and government decisions”clarified the senators.
