The services of the governor of the province of Luxembourg congratulated themselves on the management of bad weather. But monitoring is not weakening, because several rivers remain on flood alert this Friday.
The services of the governor of the province of Luxembourg draw up a positive assessment of the management of the bad weather which crossed the provincial territory on Wednesday and Thursday. But monitoring remains essential, because several rivers are still on flood alert this Friday.
This is the case for La Haute, Moyenne and Basse Semois. Same thing for Viroin. And these rivers should remain on flood alert for a good part of the day. But we are heading towards an improvement with a very slow decline which continues.
The other scenario this Friday morning is also the rivers which are no longer on alert, and which are crossing a threshold below again. It is therefore a pre-flood warning. There, there are the Haute Meuse, the Basse Lesse, the Eau Blanche, the Chiers and the Ourthe.
Concretely, this means that there is always a risk of localized flooding, but normally not serious. In any case, we must remain vigilant until the pre-alert phase is officially lifted. This will normally be the case at the end of the day, or at the latest Saturday morning.
Around a hundred interventions linked to bad weather
Firefighters from the Luxembourg emergency zone carried out around a hundred interventions linked to bad weather on Wednesday and Thursday, the governor’s services reported. Bad weather characterized by cumulative precipitation forecasts equivalent to a full month of precipitation. “This exceptional climatic episode allows us to see that the measures put in place following the floods of July 2021 worked perfectly”emphasizes the governor of the province of Luxembourg, Olivier Schmitz.
The measures in question include the reinforcement and development of infrastructure such as water evacuation systems and temporary immersion zones to combat the phenomenon of runoff water. “The coordination put in place with the mayors resulted in preventive work by municipal and provincial services to ensure cleaning and maintenance operations, as well as the identification of populations at risk (camping). From the first rains, the emergency zone teams intervened preventively to control and/or divert the start of runoff as far upstream as possible.”continues the governor, who believes that this procedure allowed “to avoid a lot of damage”.
The bad weather did not cause major damage linked to the overflowing of waterways, the governor further clarified, emphasizing the collaboration of the multiple actors associated with crisis management.
Firefighters from the emergency zone carried out another dozen pumpings starting Thursday afternoon, particularly in the regions of Aubange, Virton, and Bouillon, the emergency zone indicated early Thursday evening.
