Android Auto 13 prepares a new way to make calls

Android Auto may soon allow the use of third-party dialing apps to make calls.

Google is preparing an Android Auto update that could allow users to choose dialer apps other than Google’s own. This feature, still in development, would pave the way for using third-party applications to make calls.

Third-party dialing apps coming to Android Auto soon?

Currently, Android Auto only supports Google Phone app to make calls. However, hints in the latest app update (version 13.0) suggest that the company is working on adding support for external dialer apps. Until now, users could not use alternatives even if they were set as the default phone app on their smartphone.

This potential development would involve a list of applications approved by Google. Developers will have to adapt their applications to the requirements of Android Auto, in order to ensure compatibility with car screens while respecting safety criteria to avoid distractions while driving.

A limited, but supervised approach

Google has already released guidelines for developers to make their dialer apps compatible with Android Auto. However, they are not accessible to everyone. Only some of them, members of the beta program, can currently adapt their applications to the platform. This means that initially only a few third-party dialer apps will be available to Android Auto users.

By closely controlling this transition, Google wants to ensure the best possible user experience.
