Israel commemorates the unprecedented attack by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas on its territory on October 7, 2023 which sparked the war in the Gaza Strip a year ago.

In Réïm, at the scene of the Nova music festival where at least 370 people were killed, a collected crowd kicked off these ceremonies with a minute of silence at 6:29 a.m. sharp (5:29 a.m. in Switzerland), the time at which Hamas had launched his attack on southern Israel.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog took part in the ceremony alongside the victims’ families, most of them in tears.

Later today, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will address the nation. Other gatherings are planned in Tel Aviv or in Nir Oz, a kibbutz where around thirty residents were killed and more than 70 taken hostage and taken to Gaza.
