October 7, one year later

The Hamas attack in Israel and the war in Gaza shook the world. One year after this devastating October 7, 2023, Time recounts its impact on the intimacy of Israeli and Palestinian lives as well as the dynamics which are reshaping the Near and Middle East and the debates which agitate Switzerland.

Our special file

Red lines have the unfortunate tendency to disappear as soon as they have been crossed. The war that began a year ago was sparked by a previously unparalleled deadly Hamas attack within Israel’s borders. Nearly 1,200 victims, including more than 800 civilians, as well as the taking hostage of 251 people. It was the first crossing of a “red line”, without precedent on the Palestinian side, in the long history of the Middle East conflict.

It is in the shadow of this inexcusable massacre that there have occurred – and continue to occur – massive violations of human rights and international humanitarian law that make the Israeli assault on Gaza, literally, an extraordinary conflict. A conflict outside the law.
