POLITICS – The message has been sent. The new Minister of Health assured this Friday, October 4 that it was not “no question of touching state medical aid” (AME) allowing undocumented immigrants to access care.
“State medical aid is also insurance for the health of the French to avoid certain contagions”underlined on franceinfo Geneviève Darrieussecq, questioned about this system of which the Minister of the Interior Bruno Retailleau wishes to reduce the perimeter.
“There should be no taboo on this subject, but you should not create fantasies”added the doctor minister.

Wednesday on France 2, Prime Minister Michel Barnier estimated that it was possible to “better manage” the AME and that it was necessary “see things calmly so that those who are entitled to it can receive it”.
Nearly 500,000 beneficiaries
In 2024, the AME envelope planned by the State stands at 1.2 billion euros, or approximately 0.5% of the health expenditure planned by the Social Security budget (PLFSS). At the end of 2023, there were 466,000 AME beneficiaries.
It concerns medical and dental care, reimbursed medications, analysis and hospitalization costs, as well as those relating to certain vaccinations and certain screenings, contraception and abortion.
Bruno Retailleau suggested last week that he “not refrain from taking, in particular through regulations, a certain number of measures” on the subject often brandished as a red line by the presidential camp.
Furthermore, on the future of the bill on the end of life, the minister affirmed that it was necessary “end these debates” and want to search “the crest path with common sense to quite simply support a few rare people who need this device” assistance in dying.
Michel Barnier said on Thursday “favorable to returning to work at the time it was interrupted” on this bill.
