The faces were already tested by a night without respite. When the Hezbollah press release was published, the displaced people collapsed. It was only after hours of silence, Saturday mid-afternoon, that the Shiite movement announced it: “Sayed Hassan Nasrallah joined his fellow martyrs (..) whose march he led for almost thirty years.” In Hamra, a district in the west of the Lebanese capital, in front of the Capucine school and church transformed into an emergency accommodation center, cries ring out: “We are with you, Hezbollah!” The tension is palpable. A woman feels unwell. In a lingerie store located 50 meters away, four others wipe away their tears. “There is nothing more to say,” said one of them, declining the interview request.

However, as early as 11 a.m., the Israeli army had already announced that the leader of Hezbollah had been “eliminated”. “We don’t believe it. Israel is trying to break people’s morale but it is not possible,” Mahdi declared at the time. Sitting with friends in front of a closed shop in the southern suburbs of Beirut, the soldier on leave does not have the slightest doubt in his voice this Saturday morning.
