Will the head of the Spanish government lie to the title of his own autobiography? Resistance manual (“resistance manual”, Ediciones Peninsula, untranslated), published in 2019? Pedro Sanchez, in any case, gave himself five days to ” to reflect on “ And “answer the question of whether it’s worth it” of “continue at the head of government or [s’il lui faut] renounce this honor. Monday April 29, the socialist leader will communicate his decision, he specified in a “letter to citizens”published on his social networks, Wednesday April 24 in the evening, to everyone’s surprise.

In the morning, justice announced the opening of a preliminary investigation against his wife, Begoña Gomez, for influence peddling and corporate corruption, after a complaint filed by the far-right association Manos limpias (“clean hands”). “I am aware that they are filing a complaint against Begoña not because she did something illegal – they know there is no case – but because she is my wifereacted Mr. Sanchez, on X. The right and the ultra-right have exceeded the limits of respect for the family life of a president of the government” trying to “dehumanize and [de] delegitimize the political adversary through complaints as scandalous as they are false”.

Fundraising expert, Mme Gomez continued her professional activity after her husband came to power in 2018. In the complaint by Manos Limpias, which includes the information published by the site The Confidential, he is notably accused of having signed a letter of recommendation to a business leader who was requesting public subsidies, or of having met, in the summer of 2020, the president of the Globalia group, Javier Hidalgo, to discuss possible partnerships, while she headed a foundation, IE Africa Center. However, the business leader was then negotiating a rescue plan with the government for his airline, Air Europa, damaged by the pandemic; these negotiations resulted in a loan of 475 million euros.

Attacks are increasing

In an increasingly tense and polarized political climate, marked by several cases of alleged corruption, the two main political parties have been increasing attacks for several months. Since February, the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) has been confronted with the Koldo affair, named after the right-hand man of former infrastructure minister José Luis Abalos. Taking advantage of his entry into public administrations governed by the socialists, this former security guard would have acted as intermediary in the sale of masks, which are moreover defective, during the pandemic, for significant commissions.
