Helena reveals the story behind ‘Bad Boy’: ‘I felt angry wondering how I could have stayed’

After the success of “Loved for Real” and “Summer Body,” Helena hits hard with “Bad Boy,” a song inspired by a painful personal experience. The young Belgian artist explores a toxic relationship from her adolescence.

In an interview with Gala, Helena revealed behind the scenes of her latest song. The “bad boy” mentioned is a man with whom she had a toxic relationship at the age of 16. To translate her emotions, the 22-year-old artist relied on her usual method: entrusting her experiences to Vincha, her collaborator and co-author.

“I wanted it to be direct, without beating around the bush or giving too many details”explains Helena. In order to give an authentic dimension to the text, she shared with Vincha exchanges of messages received at the time: “Reading them, I said to myself that at 16, it wasn’t nice. I felt angry, wondering how I could have stayed. I was angry, and from that feeling flowed the song”.

At home, the “bad boy” has become a figure whose name no one speaks, “a bit like Voldemort”she said with humor.

Its title resonates particularly with its audience, touched by this sincerity. “A lot of people have told me that they recognize themselves in my song. Basically, I write for myself, but when people see themselves in my lyrics, it’s great”she confides.

Musically, “Bad Boy” marks a break with his previous hits. Helena was initially inspired by the rock style of Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo, before taking another direction: “In the end, we didn’t go in that direction, but there was still spirit.”

Although the release date of her first album remains a mystery, Helena will meet her fans on April 23, 2025 for the launch of her tour.
