The leader of the German conservatives Friedrich Merz, favorite in the February 23 elections, advocated on Thursday ‘a fundamental change’ to the right to asylum in Germany after the knife attack the day before attributed to an Afghan in an illegal situation which left two dead .

If he becomes chancellor after the vote, Mr Merz told the press that he wanted to introduce ‘a fundamental change in the right of entry, the right of asylum and the right of residence’, ‘sustainable control’ borders with neighboring countries and a ‘ban on any attempt at illegal immigration’.
