If there is one song to which the French do not forget the words, it is good. All the SOS cries“. This hit by Daniel Balavoine, sung in 2004 by Grégory Lemarchal at Les Enfoirés, then in 2012 by Natasha St-Pier, and in 2015 by Zaz on the collective tribute album Balavoine(s)had its little story.

And it is Jeanne Mas, close collaborator of the singer, who tells it, this January 20, 2025, on RTL. About this title written, composed and performed by Daniel Balavoine, she explains that she wanted it for herself.

Jeanne Mas failed

At the time, a year after the success of “First time ever”she had the chance to enter the studio with Daniel Balavoine. With Andy Scott, they worked on his first album, eponymous.

At the same time, Daniel Balavoine was also preparing his album Save lovewhich would be released in October 1985. Jeanne Mas remembers this day when she discovered “All the SOS cries.”. She says: “yes when he played it to me on the piano, I told him 'you give it to me', and he said 'no I'll keep it'”.

The singer is said to have written the text on the shores of Loch Ness lake in Scotland. Moreover, the album was recorded not far from there, in Inverness.

Jeanne Mas ended up covering the song a few years later. But for a tribute. Indeed, Daniel Balavoine had died three months after the release of the album, during a helicopter accident on the -Dakar route. “Save love” will be his greatest commercial success, selling more than 1,200,000 copies.

And Jeanne Mas explains regarding this title, in particular: “I would have preferred to never cover it again, eh, honestly. It's a song that moves me so much. Maybe because I had the exclusive right to it. and that's it, and It's one of the most beautiful songs in the world I think“.
