The famous American music producer and trumpeter Quincy Jones posthumously received an honorary Oscar during the 15th Governors Awards ceremony which took place on Sunday November 17 in front of an audience of stars. The titan of the American music industry, known for producing hit records for a veritable pantheon of music industry legends, ranging from Frank Sinatra to Michael Jackson, has died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 91 years old, just two weeks before receiving one of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ prestigious Lifetime Achievement Awards.
His daughter, actress Rashida Jones, accepted the Oscar on his behalf, telling the audience that the legendary producer was “really excited to come tonight.” “He often said: Live each day as if it were your last, and one day you will be right. And he made that…the most beautiful and best life,” she added, to thunderous applause. “The truth is that this man had an equally powerful impact on the world of cinema”said actor Jamie Foxx while presenting his award.
Jones has produced landmark Hollywood films including The Color Purple, and received several Academy Award nominations for songs and film soundtracks like The sang-froid et The Wiz. Selena Gomez, Jennifer Lopez and Zoe Saldana were among the stars holding back tears in the audience, while Jennifer Hudson performed a musical tribute.
Hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Governors Awards annually honor veterans of the film industry, many of whom are considered to have not received enough recognition at the traditional Academy Awards. French women Agnès Varda and Euzhan Palcy are among the recipients of these honorary Oscars.
