Taylor Swift, Charli XCX, Billie Eilish… female artists largely dominate the 2024 selection of the MTV European Music Awards, which brings together the big names in world music on Sunday evening in Manchester.
This 30th edition of the “MTV EMAs”, which is taking place for the seventh time in the United Kingdom, will take place in the new Co-op Live venue in Manchester, from 9 p.m. (Swiss time). It will be presented by British singer Rita Ora.
In total, 10 of the 11 artists with the highest number of nominations for this ceremony are women.
American star Taylor Swift, who continues her gigantic “Eras” tour, the most lucrative in history, leads the nominations for the second time, in seven categories after the release this year of her eleventh album “The Tortured Poets Department”.
In that of the best artist, she will face Beyoncé, the American rapper Post Malone, Billie Eilish, new queen of listening on Spotify, the British Raye, who won the record of six awards at the Brit Awards 2024, and one of the stars of the summer, Sabrina Carpenter.
Other rising female stars include American Chappell Roan, Lisa, member of the ultra-popular K-pop group Blackpink, and Nigerian star Ayra Starr.
The song of the year trophy will be played between “Birds of a Feather” by Billie Eilish, “Good Luck, Babe!” by Chappell Roan, “Espresso” by Sabrina Carpenter, “Texas Hold ‘Em” by Beyoncé, “Beautiful Things”, which revealed the American Benson Boone, or “We Can’t Be Friends” by Ariana Grande.
Latino artists in one category
Like the Grammy Awards, the American music industry awards, Latin artists including heavyweights like the Puerto Rican Bad Bunny or the Colombian Karol G, 9th most listened to artist on Spotify in 2023, do not appear in the prestigious general categories, despite planetary hits.
The latter will compete in the Latin American regional category, including Shakira, who relaunched her career with the hit “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53”, on his separation from ex-footballer Gerard Piqué.
With a strong pop dominance, this edition will also have its dose of rap and hip-hop with the Americans Travis Scott, competing in the “Best Live” category, and Busta Rhymes, who will be awarded the planetary icon trophy for the his entire career.
As for the United Kingdom and Ireland, the “brat summer” icon Charli XCX, nominated in four other categories, the popstar Dua Lipa, the rapper Central Cee, the singer Hozier and the duo electronic Chase & Status.
Aya Nakamura against Gims
In the France category, the interpreter of “Djadja”, Aya Nakamura, one of the most listened to French-speaking artists in the world, will compete against the duo Dadju and Tayc, the rapper Gims, Pierre Garnier, revealed in the Star Academy, to Slimane and the singer Vitaa.
The 2023 ceremony, which was to be held near Paris, was canceled due to the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, the organizers having considered that the moment was “not conducive to an international festive event”.
