Tyka Nelson, Prince’s younger sister, has died at the age of 64, her son, President, announced to the Minnesota Star Tribune. However, the cause of his death has not been specified.
“We are extremely saddened to learn of the passing of Tyka Nelson. She was well known as a talented singer and songwriter and Prince’s sister, supporting him and working to keep his legacy alive for years. Our thoughts are with the President, Sir [ses fils] and to her entire family during this difficult time,” said in a statement a representative of Primary Wave, the Music publishing company with which she had collaborated for several years
Born on May 18, 1960, Tyka was the daughter of musician John L. Nelson and singer Mattie Shaw, and the younger sister of music icon Prince.
Tyka Nelson notably released four albums: “Royal Blue” (1988), “Yellow Moon”, “Red Sky” (1992), “A Brand New Me” (2008) and “Hustler” (2011).
Also, last June, she planned to retire after a farewell concert at the Dakota in Minnesota, but illness prevented her from performing.
“I’m getting older. I’m not really a singer. I am an author. I just happen to be able to sing and I enjoy doing it,” she told the Minnesota Star Tribune at the time.
