Winner of 28 Grammy Awards, known for being the producer of Michael Jackson, and in particular for his worldwide success Thriller in 1982, trumpeter Quincy Jones died this Sunday, November 3, 2024, his family announced in a press release relayed by Associated Press.

He was 91 years old. Quincy Jones also worked for Aretha Franklin, Will Smith and Frank Sinatra. His death was confirmed by his press secretary, Arnold Robinson, in a press release which did not specify the cause.

Born in Chicago in 1933, Quincy Jones discovered music as a teenager. The piano, then the trumpet.

In the 1950s, he joined Lionel Hampton’s orchestra and began composing arrangements. He wrote hundreds of them, for advertisements, shows and performers.

In 1955, he formed his own Big Band with which he released his first album. This Is How I Feel About Jazz.

First success and career with Michael Jackson

His first real success came in 1963, with It’s My Partya song performed by Lesley Gore.

At the same time, he composes film scores. It is moreover via this activity that he will meet Michael Jackson in 1978. The singer chooses Quincy Jones to co-produce, his album Off the Wall is released in August 1979. Success: 15 million copies are sold.

In the 1980s, he produced the albums Thriller (1982) et Bad (1987), again for Michael Jackson, enough to allow the singer to become the biggest pop star of all time.

After these multiple successes (28 Grammy Awards), Quincy Jones will turn more towards his business.
