In a recent interview with PlayboySpiritbox singer Courtney LaPlante has responded to criticism over her perceived “soft” approach to aggressive metal Music. LaPlante sets himself apart from traditional standards of performance in Heavy Metal, where expectations are often influenced by a male view of the genre. “People expect you to wince while shouting, but in reality it can interfere with your performance. Relaxing your face is much more effective,” she explains.
Criticism and honesty in the music industry
LaPlante also addressed what she perceives as a lack of sincere criticism in the metal scene, which she sometimes considers too protective of artists. “What’s missing in our genre is authentic criticism. On forums like Reddit, fans express themselves freely, without outside influence. It’s important to give them this space,” she said. Unlike the hip-hop scene, where criticism is often more direct, she notices a lack of public transparency in metal, which she says sometimes hinders artistic development.

An introspective approach

For LaPlante, these values should be universal and not require special recognition, a perspective she often shares with her fans.
A journey without compromise
