Inspired by a chilling true story, The Asunta affair tops the ranking of Netflix’s most-watched series. Created by Ramón Campos, to whom we owe The Young Ladies of the Telephone, this Spanish production in 6 episodes returns to a criminal case which hit the headlines in Spain: the assassination in 2013 of Asunta Basterra, 12 years old. If gray areas persist regarding their guilt and they have always proclaimed their innocence, his adoptive parents, Alfonso Basterra and Rosario Porto, respectively played by Tristán Ulloa and Candela Peña, were indicted for the murder of the little girl of 12 years old, played by Iris Wu. Without lifting the veil on the mystery of their motive, the series highlights theories on the course of the crime and has ruled out others. The series caused reactions, notably Alfonso Basterra, who sent several letters to the director of the fiction.

The production of The Asunta affair took the side of realism through a careful reconstruction from the archives available on the case, and also with actors resembling the real protagonists they play, as we can see in our slideshow. The resemblance between Rosario Porto and the real Candela Peña is particularly striking and the arrest scenes of Alfonso Basterra and Rosario Porto have been reproduced almost identically.
The Asunta affair : what happened to the parents accused of the murder of their daughter?
During the media trial, the prosecution advanced the theory that Alfonso Basterra and Rosario Porto were worn out by the idea of taking care of Asunta and forming the perfect family after the implosion of their marriage following, among other facts , to the revelation of an extramarital affair by Rosario Porto. At the end of the debates, which are recounted in the sixth and final episode of the fiction, the couple was found guilty of the murder of Asunta on October 30, 2015 and sentenced to eighteen years in prison. Rosario Porto ended his life in 2020 and Alfonso Basterra is still serving his sentence.
