Why bother with pants, a skirt or a dress when you can be underneath. This trend of “No-pants” which can be translated as “without pants”, is gaining ground, led by a leading figure: Dua Lipa.

The British artist who will perform on June 12 and 13 in Nîmes, dropped his stockings in his latest clip “Illusion“. Published on Friday April 12 on YouTube, the video has already accumulated more than nine million views. If the artist wears tights, there are no additional stockings on her legs. Enough to relaunch a trend born there is decades old.

A not-so-new fashion

In an article published in Vogue this Tuesday, March 16, the American media returns to this craze which emerged in the 1950s. At that time, many dancers wore leotards accompanied simply by tights. But the person who popularized this trend was Edie Sedgwick in the 1960s. The American actress and model, who was also the muse of the artist Andy Warhol, immortalized this fashion in memorable photos.

A second wind with aerobics

Two decades later, it was aerobics that popularized the “No-pants“. This sporting practice, which was a reference in the 80s, helped propel actresses like Jane Fonda to the forefront. The American released a first physical exercise DVD in 1983 which was a best-selling seller. Twenty-one other issues will follow, in which the double Oscar-winning actress will promote this sport, in this legendary outfit, which will become inseparable from aerobics.

Return to the forefront

In recent years, the “No-Pants” is slowly coming back to the forefront. In 2022, it was Kendall Jenner, Kim Kardashian’s sister, who appeared in an outfit without pants, during the brand’s spring 2023 collection Bottega Veneta. After her, Hailey Bieber, Bella Hadid and even her little sister Kylie Jenner followed.

On Tiktok the “No pants” trends have accumulated more than 500 million views, as reported by Inter. This fashion has been the subject of more than 17,000 publications on the social network.

It remains to be seen whether theNo pants” will continue this year, before perhaps falling back into oblivion. Because in fashion, everything is a question of cycle.
