After successfully leading the Resident Evil cinematic saga, many were wondering what Paul WS Anderson’s next projects would be. If his 2020 Monster Hunter did not meet with the expected success, the director seems to want to return with a new feature film…
The best of the worst
Paul WS Anderson is a British filmmaker who distinguished himself in particular in the years 2000-2010 thanks to his involvement in the direction and production of numerous adaptations of video games to cinema, the most famous of which certainly remain the first live-action Resident Evil. Indeed, Anderson directed four opuses and produced six films out of the 7 that make up the saga, a work with which Capcom seemed particularly satisfied since the filmmaker would direct an adaptation of the license a few years later Monster Hunter.
However, Paul WS Anderson is also famous for the generally negative receptions experienced by the majority of his projects. Of Mortal Kombat has Monster Hunter passing through Alien vs Predator, the director is considered by some to be one of the worst filmmakers working. Paradoxically, his films nevertheless enjoy great success at the box office, the saga Resident Evil having exceeded one billion in theatrical revenue over the 15 years of its operation.
Post-apocalyptic fantasy
After the failure of his Monster Hunter, which will only collect 48 million dollars in theaters on a budget of 60 millionWS Anderson is now preparing his return with a new adaptation. Exit the video game this time since the filmmaker has instead set his sights on the adaptation of a short story written by George RR Martin in the 1980s. Taking place in a post-apocalyptic universe, In the Lost Lands follows a witch in search of a spell to transform a person into a werewolf. To complete this quest, she will be accompanied by a mysterious hunter with whom she will have to cross and survive a world that has become hostile.
True to form, Paul WS Anderson once again surrounds himself with Mila Jovovich, his companion since their meeting on the first Resident Evil also became the director’s most recurring collaborator. This time, the American actress shares the bill with Dave Bautista, a former wrestler who became an actor and who notably distinguished himself in the films Guardians of the Galaxy by James Gunn. Expected for March 7 in American theaters, In the Lost Lands seems to promise a stylized B series which should not displease fanatic aficionados. No release date has been determined for France at this time.
