The Star Wars saga continues its conquest of the SVOD market in 2024, in the absence of cinemas, with the broadcast of a brand new live-action series. After The Acolyte which divided fan communities, it is the turn of an equally daring project to make its debut on the Streaming platform. Skeleton Crew is openly inspired by the cinematographic work of Steven Spielberg and shakes up the universe imagined by George Lucas. The JV editorial team had the chance to see the first 3 episodes in preview… here are our impressions.

Disney is banking on the Star Wars saga to attract millions of subscribers to its SVOD service and convince those already attracted to stay a few more months/years. After The Acolyte which was not unanimously appreciated by fans, another live-action series is entrusted with the difficult task of ending the year 2024 in style. Skeleton Crew is putting all the chances on its side by entrusting the screenplay to the quartet – Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, Jon Watts and Christopher Ford – and by securing a solid cast with Jude Law (Fantastic Beasts, Captain Marvel) in the lead role. , Sherlock Holmes, etc.) and at his side a host of young shoots because this series is aimed at children of all ages.
Star Wars Skeleton Crew, set in the New Republic era, tells the journey of four kids who make an enigmatic discovery on their seemingly peaceful home planet, before being lost in a strange and perilous galaxy. Their journey leads them to meet intriguing figures, like Jod Na Nawood, a mysterious character played by Jude Law. A return to childhood
To say that I grew up with Star Wars as a backdrop is a given. I was born in the 80s. So I have been sensitive to the Force since I was very young. The trilogy, and even the prelogy to a lesser extent, left me with lasting memories, but I cannot say the same about the postlogy, whose qualities and faults I recognize. However, I do not spit on the Star Wars “by Disney” universe. I believe that several series including Andor, Visions and The Acolyte as well as the film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story make this distant galaxy incomparable. So I was waiting with some impatience for the new live-action project from Lucasfilm, inspired by one of the greatest directors in the History of the 7th Art.
What can I say in front of Skeleton Crew except “Thank you Spielberg”, which may seem paradoxical given that the North American filmmaker did not work on this Live Action series exclusive to Disney+. It’s worth remembering that I am a die-hard Steven Spielberg fan. I have seen (and re-watched) the majority of his filmography which alone gave rise to, then consolidated, my once nascent and now affirmed cinephilia. Knowing that a Star Wars series is openly inspired by his work, the films he directed or to which he made a significant contribution could only tickle my curiosity.
Skeleton Crew pays homage in its own way to The Goonies by Richard Donner (1985), Treasure Planet by John Musker and Ron Clements (2002), Hook or the Revenge of Captain Hook by Steven Spielberg (1992), but also to the Stranger Things series produced by Netflix, itself inspired by the previously mentioned works. The circle is complete in 2024! However, This Star Wars series is not an amalgamation of clumsy references just digested. On the contrary, it has its own tone, that of a family adventure film featuring young protagonists on a galactic journey.
Steven Spielberg's major themes, notably childhood, wonder and family, cement a story where adventure with a capital A occupies a central place. Skeleton Crew is an ode to escape at its noblest and features characters with wavering morality dedicated to transcending themselves for the common good. I think first of all of Jod Na Nawood (aka Crimson Jack) played by Jude Law. Finally, the four children respond to the pirate with a certain ease in front of the camera, even if certain sequences lack conviction.
Star Wars is also a guarantee of having a blast and traveling through space in the hope of discovering new planets. In terms of change of scenery, Skeleton Crew is still struggling to stand out. Certain places visited as well as several visuals will remain in my memory before suffering the ravages of time and disappearing permanently. There remains this epic breath and this taste for adventure specific to this science fiction universe which tends to renew itself for better and for worse. This new series targets new generations and in doing so took me back to my childhood. What more could you ask for?
I am not the main target of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew which is primarily aimed at children. I am aware of this and understand that I could miss such a proposal. However, the first 3 episodes awakened the toddler in me. The tour de force is to be saluted.
