“The secret factory”, a screening-debate on the hidden life of factories and mines
Insights into worker autonomy in the steel and mining industries of Lorraine and Luxembourg.
On the occasion of documentary film month, the Écomusée Creusot Montceau invites you to discover “The Secret Factory” by Emmanuel Graff. The screening will take place in the presence of the director and will be followed by a debate.
We know the world of industry and mining especially for its difficult aspects and its struggles. We know less about the intimate aspects, worker autonomy, the freedoms that we could grant ourselves, the life of the teams. “The Secret Factory” offers a journey into the world of steelmaking and iron mines in Lorraine and Luxembourg from the 1970s to the present day, to show its convivial sides and its autonomy and even resistance, through mowing, DIY, factory meals, parties, humor, solidarity and exchanges. Then this documentary film offers to take stock of these aspects in the 21st century: what has become of these ancient freedoms?
Emmanuel Graff was born in Colmar in 1965. He lived in Thionville until 1979, then in Lausanne until 2020. Documentary filmmaker, he co-directed, with Isabel Gnaccarini, “Sous le gueulard, la vie…” (1992), and, with Stéphane Bubel, “The Legacy of the Iron Man” (2009), two sharp perspectives on the world of work, particularly in the Fensch valley. He continues his introspection in the Pays Haut Lorraine with “La Trace des pères” (2013) and “L’Usine secrete” (2022).
